Some people estimate that as much as half of a billion pounds of toxic drywall was shipped into the US from China during the boom. This is a major problem, as now people are reporting the smell of sulfur emanating from that drywall. But this looks like it could be a much more far-ranging conflict than those isolated incidents.

The first consumer complaints came from the state of Florida, where not surprisingly much of the fake real estate boom occurred. Beyond that there were major hurricanes there, especially in 2006, that prompted a lot of low-cost buying of drywall.

There have also been complaints about further Chinese drywall problems coming out of other southern states such as North Carolina, most recently. Some people have speculated that this is because the warm climate activates the toxicity within the drywall and releases its stench.

The problem may have been caused by drywall manufacturers in China using coal from dirty mines. The truth is not known, but some believe it is likely that waste ash from these mines was transported over to drywall factories, where it was then mixed into the ultimate end-product.

Some people are demanding that their Congress do something about this. Tensions in the US have risen as it seems that every couple of months a new story comes out about how China’s “relaxed” labor standards have led to some sort of poison being in US imported products.

Overall, it is simply a sad problem because not only are people subject to living in the midst of this filth (which they paid for), but some are even ending up in hospitals. Pens are designed to give poultry plenty of room to move about because overcrowded birds get stressed, become sick more easily, can start to peck other birds and can stop laying. Chickens need space, the more the better, although this will inevitably depend on the area of backyard available for them.  The chicken pen should have plenty of green vegetation growing in it for the chickens to forage, otherwise you will need to feed them on a daily basis.  Remember that hens also need access to water, because they sweat easily especially in warm weather.  If their beaks are open and their wings splayed, they need a drink.

Hens are placid animals that are easy prey for many types of predator, including raccoons, weasels, foxes, hawks, rats and neighborhood dogs and cats.  It is your responsibility to provide proper protection for your hens, so your chicken run must be designed to give them a safe environment in which to live and lay.  

There is nothing complicated about a hen pen, but it needs to be made properly. It makes sense to get expert advice before making a hen pen, unless you are experienced in space, feeding, shelter and health requirements for keeping poultry. Putting up a chicken pen is very straightforward but, if you don’t know what you’re doing, it is so easy to underestimate what your chickens need to survive and prosper.  They will reward you with a regular supply of lovely free-range eggs.
